Google Webmaster Tools is one of the most powerful tools at a webmaster’s disposal. With this tool, you can greatly improve your website’s structure – not only making it easier for your users to navigate, but also making it easier for search engines to crawl.

One of the first things you should do in Google Webmaster Tools after your website has gone live is to set up a sitemap. The sitemap will inform Google of your site’s hierarchy, and help it to crawl your page better.

To set up a sitemap, simply navigate to the “Crawl” section on the left-hand side, click on “Sitemaps” and then “Add Sitemap.” Type in sitemap.xml and click “Submit.” Easy!

Another useful functionality of Google Webmaster Tools is the ability to see which webpages, if any, are returning crawl errors.

To check your crawl errors, click on “Crawl” then “Crawl Errors.” Here you can see a list of all your pages that have returned soft 404 or hard 404 errors. Ideally you should redirect all your 404s to other pages on your site with related content, so that your users don’t end up on a page without content on it.

Remember that with SEO, there’s no such thing as set it and forget it. You should monitor your Google Webmaster Tools account on a regular basis to keep an eye out for any new crawling issues or errors that might come up.
