It’s no secret that a large part of digital marketing, particularly in the field of SEO, is hardly taught across Australian universities. A degree in Media Communications or Journalism often presents students with a more philosophical perspective, such as debating the existence of Internet addiction or discussing Habermas’ public sphere. Yet, when it comes to actually applying the knowledge to real-life situations or finding employment in general, basic understanding of digital marketing, SEO and search engines play a crucial part. Luckily with the power of the Internet, there are now hundreds of resources available online that can teach us just about anything. Articles, books, short clips, lectures – the opportunities are endless. In this article, we’ve rounded up some of the best free online digital marketing courses, suitable for everyone interested in expanding their knowledge. Whether you are a beginner or a pro, welcome to the world of SEO, Google Analytics and social media marketing.

Social Media Courses
Create a Professional Online Presence
Whether you are a start-up brand or a well-established business, social media presence plays a crucial part in developing a strong brand image. Once again developed by the University of Leeds and Institute of Coding, this course is presented by Meg Pickard, a trainee with over 22 years of experience in the industry. Pickard identifies and evaluates various communication strategies tailored to different platforms, creating a clear plan for developing a strong online presence. The overall duration of the course is 2 weeks with 2 hours of weekly study and it is available now.
Create a Social Media Marketing Campaign
As an extension of the previous course, Pickard digs a little deeper in the role social media plays in digital marketing. Apart from maintaining a strong online presence, there are ways that businesses can use the vast reach of social media to their own benefit. This course is focused on discussing how to develop successful social media strategies, identify the correct target audience that they can be applied to, and the contributions both paid and organic reach bring to the increased revenue. Also available now, this course is essential to broaden your understanding of the ever evolving world of social media.
Digital Skills: Social Media teaches effective uses of social media, particularly for business owners and upcoming brands. Developed by Accenture, Mark Sherwin breaks the course into 2 weeks, covering various target groups, social media management tools, top tips and performance measurements. It is a short simple course that does not require any prior knowledge of social media and digital marketing, yet manages to teach highly important entrepreneurial skills.
Google Analytics Courses
When it comes to learning about Google Ads and Google Analytics, many of the courses available online tend to be fairly expensive. However, Google is one of the most used search engines in the world and therefore, it is crucial to have a solid understanding of how it operates. Luckily, Google itself provides access to Google Analytics Academy that outlines courses for beginners, as well as, for more advanced users.
In addition, Google Digital Garage also presents various online courses to help grow businesses, even offering an official certificate at the end. However, at the moment the only free course is The Fundamentals of Digital Marketing consisting of 26 modules and 40 hours in total, all created by Google trainers. What a better way to learn more about Google, than from the author itself!
