The Challenge

Affordable Furniture is an Australian furniture retailer offering competitive pricing on quality pieces. Despite strong in-store sales, their eCommerce presence was being overshadowed by big-box competitors with massive SEO budgets and established domain authority. This campaign was managed by SEO Melbourne, Melbourne's specialist SEO agency.

Their product pages lacked the depth and structure needed to rank against established competitors, and there was no content strategy to capture the research-phase traffic that precedes furniture purchases.

Furniture is researched in rooms, not in SKUs. Shoppers search for a living room layout, a bedroom size or a dining table that seats eight long before they search for a specific product, and the big-box retailers Affordable Furniture competes with have spent years building pages that capture those research queries. A retailer with competitive pricing and a showroom still loses that sale if the shopper has already settled on a competitor's product by the time they are ready to buy.

Affordable Furniture's position was a common one for an Australian retailer with both an online store and physical locations: strong product pages by retail standards, but no content sitting above them to catch the research phase, and technical debt underneath them holding back what already ranked.

Three things were holding rankings back, and they compounded each other. The product pages lacked the depth and structure to rank against established competitors. There was no content strategy to capture research-phase searches, so the buying journey started on someone else's site. And crawl issues, pagination problems and slow pages meant that even well-built product pages were not being fully indexed or fairly assessed.

The result was stagnant year-over-year performance: the site was not getting worse, but nothing about it gave Google a reason to rank it higher than the big-box alternatives for the same queries.

Our Approach

We began with the technical overhaul because it unlocked everything else. Crawl issues were fixed, proper pagination implemented and site speed improved, so that the product pages that already existed could be crawled and ranked on their merits. In parallel we built the category content strategy: room-by-room buying guides for living room, bedroom and dining, each with size calculators and style selectors so that a shopper researching a space could do the work on Affordable Furniture's site rather than a competitor's.

The third strand connected online visibility to the showroom. Local SEO integration targeted "furniture near me" and Melbourne-specific searches, so that a shopper who had used a buying guide online could find the nearest showroom when they were ready to see the piece in person.

01

Category Content Strategy

Built out room-by-room buying guides (living room, bedroom, dining) with size calculators and style selectors that captured research-phase search traffic.

02

Technical SEO Overhaul

Fixed crawl issues, implemented proper pagination, and optimised site speed — resolving the technical debt that was holding back otherwise strong product pages.

03

Local SEO Integration

Optimised for "furniture near me" and Melbourne-specific searches, connecting online visibility with showroom foot traffic.

The Results

The combination of enriched content and technical fixes drove conversions up 1.9× as the site captured more purchase-intent traffic. Year-over-year organic performance grew 2.2×, proving the compound effect of a well-executed eCommerce SEO strategy.

The buying guides became the top organic landing pages, demonstrating that content-led eCommerce SEO drives real revenue.

Online conversions grew 1.9× as the site captured more purchase-intent traffic, and organic performance grew 2.2× year over year, which is the comparison that matters for a retailer whose baseline had been flat. Key furniture terms reached page 1. The buying guides became the top organic landing pages on the site, which confirmed the premise of the strategy: the research-phase content was doing the work, and the product pages were converting the visitors it brought in.

The sequence is worth noting. The technical fixes came first, the buying guides second, and the conversion lift followed both, which is why we would resist attributing the result to any one of the three strands.

What This Means for a Business Like Yours

For a furniture or homewares retailer competing with national chains, the Affordable Furniture campaign shows where the leverage is: not in outspending the chains on product pages, but in owning the room-level research queries with tools that help shoppers decide, and in making sure the technical foundation does not quietly cap what the product pages can achieve.

The obvious next step for a business like this is to extend the buying-guide model to every category the store sells and to keep the showroom pages tied to the guides, so that local and online demand reinforce each other.
